Stephen Kliewer, has been involved in the mental health field for around 16 years. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and the director of the Center for Optimal Living, an integrated, multi-disciplinary program that helps people manage and live with their chronic pain. Stephen believes that everyone can find improved health, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Healing comes through active support, authentic acceptance, increased awareness, and improved skills. People can learn to help themselves and enjoy a happier, healthier life.

Stephen employs an approach that uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and a mindfulness based approach that focused on workable mental and behavioral changes. He is also a certified Eye Movement, Desensitization, and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist. EMDR is a trauma focused therapy with special benefits for people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Stephen has a special interest in working with anxiety and chronic pain. Each person is different, with different needs, preferences and goals, and thus the patient needs to have significant input in the development of their individualized treatment plan. Stephen is uniquely qualified to work with people who wish to incorporate their spirituality into their mental health work. He is the author of a textbook for physicians on the issue of Healthcare and Spirituality.

Stephen holds a Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Walden University. This graduate program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Additionally he has a Masters and Doctorate in Theology, and is an ordained Presbyterian Minister. He has done extensive work related to the integration of mental health and physical health and is certified to provide behavioral services in the primary health care setting. He is constantly seeking to find balance and growth in his own life. He encourages self-care and self-compassion in his clients.
